The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) will include ‘Hemp’ in the title of one of the six Agricultural Technical Advisory Committees (ATACs) – noting a significant evolution in both agriculture and cannabis policy. Specifically, ‘Hemp’ has now earned a place within the ATAC titled ‘Tobacco, Cotton, Peanuts, and Hemp.’

The ATACs were established under the Trade Act of 1974 and the Federal Advisory Committee Act. Spearheaded by the Secretary of Agriculture and the U.S. Trade Representative, ATACs provide vital advice on agricultural trade matters, including trade barriers and agreement negotiations.

ATACs periodically meet in person and virtually depending on the urgency of the matter(s). In relevant part, a June 8, 2023, Federal Register notice, stated that USDA and the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) will be accepting nominations for appointment to all ATACs. Though the roles are not compensated, and travel/accommodations are not covered, service on an ATAC provides an invaluable opportunity to shape the future of agricultural trade policies.
