Association Events Targeted for Scams

Since the beginning of 2024, our Trade Association professionals have seen an increase in scammers targeting persons who may be attending or have registered to attend trade association events such as meetings, shows, and conferences. These scammers email potential attendees and offer to sell, for a hefty cost, the attendee list and their contact information. For example:

However, most associations and show managers typically provide this attendee information for free to all registered guests.

While those who routinely attend shows and conferences may be aware of this scam, other members, guests, and attendees may not. With the uptick in targeted scams, we are recommending that associations and show managers warn potential attendees of these common scams.  We suggest encouraging the potential attendees of your meetings, shows, and conferences to be diligent and to report suspicious emails to you for further follow-up and action.
