Next month, The Food Institute kicks off its 3-day virtual training seminar on Food Labeling and Olsson Frank Weeda Terman Matz PC will be co-hosting the event.
Each day has its own unique theme. On day one, attendees may expect to first learn the basics of the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) food labeling requirements, including mandatory label disclosures and rules for authorized food labeling claims (such as low fat, healthy, gluten-free, organic). Hot topics such as the requirements for bio-engineered (BE) labeling and country-of-origin labeling will also be reviewed.
Day two of the seminar will cover the murky area of undefined claims, such as natural, artisan, handcrafted, wholesome, made with “real’ ingredients, and others. Special attention will be given to FDA enforcement and lawsuits brought by class action attorneys.
The final day will end with a series of special sessions devoted to carbon labeling, the naming of plant-based animal alternatives, front-of pack nutrition symbols, changes in clean labeling, amendments to standards of identity, and future trends and developments, including a review of the proposed Food Labeling Modernization Act of 2021.
OFW Law’s Bruce Silverglade will be representing the law firm at the Summit. As a principal attorney at OFW Law, Mr. Silverglade’s practice includes tracking food labeling trends, resolution of competitive disputes involving food labeling and advertising claims, proactive responses to FDA regulatory proposals, management of class action lawsuits, FDA and FTC enforcement actions challenging food labeling and advertising claims, and implementation of food labeling regulations. Mr. Silverglade has extensive experience with such issues on both the national and international levels, working with top officials at FDA, FTC, USDA, the Canadian government, the Japanese government, the European Commission, and international agencies, including the Codex Alimentarius Commission and the World Health Organization.
New to the Summit this year are guest speakers Carlos F. Ramirez, Principal at Reese LLP, and Eva Greenthal, Senior Science Policy Associate, Center for Science in the Public Interest. Based in New York, Mr. Ramirez is primarily a litigator of consumer class actions. Ms. Greenthal is an advocate for policies to promote public health by improving the health and safety of the U.S. food supply. CSPI is a major driving force behind the introduction of the Food Labeling Modernization Act.
